Clinicians, highly attentive to risks of adverse events with psychiatric medications, might be less attuned to adverse events resulting from psychotherapeutic interventions. These investigators conducted the first-ever systematic review of 83 studies from 1975 through 2019 reporting adverse effects in relation to meditation practices and meditation-based psychotherapies. The group included 54 experimental studies (n=2673), 14 observational studies (n=4023), and 15 case studies (n=31).
Overall, 66% of the studies reported at least one type of meditation adverse event (MAE) affecting 1012 meditators from observational studies, 59 from experimental studies, and 31 from case studies. Pooled prevalence across non–case studies was 8.1%. About half…
