Although most children return to school and activities in the weeks following a concussion, concern about long-term residual challenges remain. In a secondary analysis of 3052 children (ages 5–18 years) with acute concussions enrolled in a study at 9 pediatric emergency departments in Canada, researchers evaluated outcomes in the 432 children whose parents completed outcomes assessments at 1 year.
The concussion was the first in 80% of children. Thirty-four children (8%) had a repeat concussion during the year of study. Parents reported full recovery at 1 year for 90% of children without and 74% of children with repeat concussion. However, only 75% and 50%, respectively, reported that their child was symptom free.
