The risk for reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in hepatitis C virus (HCV)–infected patients undergoing direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy is well understood. Recent observational study findings raise concern about possible increased risk for reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection in these patients.
To further evaluate this risk, researchers analyzed data from 37 clinical trials of HCV therapies in which 12,249 patients received a DAA regimen only, 243 received pegylated interferon only, 327 received a combination regimen, and 997 received placebo.
