Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) can contain nicotine, and their use can lead to nicotine dependence. Furthermore, e-cigarettes can cause lung injury (NEJM JW Gen Med Jan 1 2020). In this study, researchers used a nationally representative sample of about 1.2 million U.S. adults to determine trends in e-cigarette use from 2016 to 2018.
The prevalence of e-cigarette use increased from 4.5% to 5.4% (nationally, an increase from 11 million to 13.7 million adults). The youngest age group (18 to 24) had the largest increase, from 9.2% to 15%. Prevalence among never-smokers increased from 1.4% to 2.3%, whereas among current cigarette smokers, prevalence remained level at 14.7%.
