As we head into influenza season with the COVID-19 pandemic still raging in many parts of the country, there is concern that overlapping respiratory viral infections will tax the medical system and further complicate management of children presenting with fever and respiratory symptoms. In the current retrospective study, researchers compared the clinical presentations of 315 children with COVID-19 diagnosed in spring 2020 and 1402 patients with seasonal influenza diagnosed during the 2019–2020 season at one hospital system. Findings include the following:
Children with COVID-19 were older than those with seasonal influenza, both overall (median age, 8.4 vs. 3.9 years) and in those requiring hospitalization (median age, 9.7 vs. 4.2 years).
