Malignant biliary obstruction is typically treated via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and, failing that, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)–guided biliary drainage or percutaneous biliary drainage. The gallbladder provides another route to drain the biliary tree as it directly connects with the common bile duct. In a recent study, researchers evaluated the success of EUS-guided gallbladder drainage in 28 patients with malignant distal biliary obstruction who failed both ERCP and EUS-guided biliary drainage.
