Respiratory viral infections in pregnant women can negatively affect infant outcomes. Investigators now report interim analysis results of early infant outcomes in a multisite prospective cohort of women in the U.S. who were pregnant or within 6 weeks postpartum and had confirmed or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection.
The analysis included 263 infants enrolled in a registry up until June 22, 2020: 179 born to mothers with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test and 84 to mothers with a negative test. Mothers who tested positive for the virus were more likely to be symptomatic (81.6% vs. 63.1%). Of 44 infants admitted to neonatal intensive care, 14 had difficulty or fast breathing and 2 had apnea.
