Although acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after pediatric heart surgery, the long-term consequences remain unknown. In a prospective study of 124 children ages 1 month to 18 years undergoing heart surgery at two children's hospitals, researchers monitored proteinuria, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) 3 months after discharge and annually for 48 months.
Postoperative AKI developed in 46% of patients (only one child was dialyzed). Factors associated with AKI included younger age and higher preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
