Since double-balloon enteroscopy was first described in 2001, the field of device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) has evolved to include single-balloon, double-balloon, and spiral enteroscopy. Although capsule endoscopy is commonly used to detect small bowel pathology, the use of DAE in clinical practice has not been widespread, possibly due to a lack of knowledge about its utility, efficiency, and safety.
In a multicenter, retrospective study from four academic sites in the United States, researchers describe the duration, diagnostic and therapeutic yields, and safety of 1787 DAEs performed for small bowel evaluation.
