Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is widely used in countries with a high prevalence of gastric cancer to screen for premalignant lesions and treatable early-stage cancers. In the current study, researchers evaluated whether implementing an institutional protocol of spending a minimum of 3 minutes for observation time during EGD increased the detection rate of upper gastrointestinal (GI) neoplasms.
During the 2-year intervention when the protocol was implemented, 30,506 patients underwent screening EGDs at one center in Korea. Data prospectively collected from this group were compared with data from a historical cohort of over 100,000 patients undergoing screening EGD before the intervention.
