Most women associate an uncomfortable itching sensation around the genital area with a vaginal infection (vaginitis). But other conditions, including skin problems, can cause itching that doesn't go away with treatment for vaginitis. One such skin problem is vulvar lichen sclerosus (LS).
LS is a chronic (long-lasting or repeatedly comes and goes), inflammatory (causing the body to react with swelling) skin condition. It can affect any part of the skin. In women it most often shows up on the vulva, which is the area just outside the vagina. On the edges of the vulva are the outer lips covered with hair, called the labia majora.
