The epidemics of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) infections are considered the most important epidemiologic occurrences in the Americas. CHIKV infection is characterized clinically by fever, exanthema, myalgia, headaches, and arthralgia. CHIKV also has neurologic complications such as meningoencephalitis, myeloradiculitis, myelitis, myeloneuropathy, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). The most common symptoms of ZIKV infection are skin rash, fever, arthralgia, myalgia, headache, and conjunctivitis. Other conditions that involve the nervous system include microcephaly in offspring of infected mothers, GBS, transverse myelitis, and meningitis.
