A panel of 15 HIV experts reviewed 539 recent peer-reviewed articles (through August 22, 2020) to rate and update the 2018 antiretroviral therapy (ART) recommendations.
ART is recommended for all persons with detectable viremia.
Treatment usually should be started as soon as possible.
Most patients can be treated initially with any of various three-drug ART regimens or, in select populations, a two-drug regimen containing an integrase strand transfer inhibitor.
Specific recommendations focus on certain patient groups: pregnant women, persons with significant comorbidities, and those with common opportunistic infections.
