Eating disorders are common, but most sufferers do not get help. Whether a stand-alone smartphone-based intervention for eating disorders would be effective at reducing symptoms is unknown. In this randomized, controlled trial, 392 participants recruited from a popular eating-disorders website reported at least one binge-eating episode in the preceding 4 weeks.
The intervention was a self-guided smartphone app using a cognitive-behavioral approach and focusing on normalizing eating behavior, reducing the importance placed on weight and shape, and promoting adaptive emotion-regulation strategies.
