Microscopic colitis (MC) is an autoimmune condition that is typically associated with use of certain medications or other autoimmune conditions or is idiopathic. In a specified area of Switzerland with a population of approximately 1 million, researchers identified 218 patients with MC during the period from 1994 to 2017. Exposures to known risk factors included HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (27%), proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs; 22.5%), serotonin reuptake inhibitors (22.5%), and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs; 14%). The incidence of MC increased from 0.36/100,000 person-years in 1994 to 6.85/100,000 in 2017.
