Programmatic, or organized, screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) is associated with uptake rates exceeding 80%, but there are few data regarding the required program components and their relative effectiveness. This study reports the results of a mailed fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and opportunistic colonoscopy-based program involving over 1 million participants in a large U.S. integrated healthcare system:
At baseline, about 40% of the cohort had undergone sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy and thus was up to date with CRC screening.
Of the remaining, about 500,000 were mailed a FIT kit, and 20% of the overall cohort returned completed tests within 4 weeks. An additional 10% were accrued via automated phone calls and mailed reminder postcards.…
