Recurrence of psychotic phenomenon in people with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia increases healthcare costs, as well as directly affecting the patient and their family (e.g., loss of employment, impaired household functioning). From 40% to 60% of patients will experience a recurrence in the 3 years after a first episode of psychosis (FEP). At present, clinicians have limited ability to identify the patients who will go on to have a recurrence of psychosis. The current authors sought to develop multifactorial algorithms for predicting recurrence within the first 2 years following FEP.
