It might seem unnecessary to continue to report negative results of hydroxychloroquine trials for COVID-19, but some patients still ask about the drug, and I recently encountered a physician in my practice community who continues to tout it. In this latest reported trial from the U.K., several thousand hospitalized patients with COVID-19 received hydroxychloroquine or usual care. At baseline, 23% of patients were not receiving oxygen, 60% were receiving oxygen only, and 17% were mechanically ventilated.
Mortality at 28 days was not significantly different in the hydroxychloroquine and usual-care groups (27% vs. 25%). Hydroxychloroquine recipients were slightly less likely to be discharged from the hospital at 28 days (60% vs. 63%). Hydroxych…
