Patient-facing healthcare workers are assumed to be at increased risk for infection with SARS-CoV-2. They may subsequently transmit the virus to their family members and other private contacts. A first estimate of the magnitude of this risk now comes from an analysis of 158,445 healthcare workers employed by the Scottish National Health System (79% female). Researchers assessed data on occupational roles among those admitted to hospital for COVID-19 between March 1 and June 6, 2020.
The risk for admission to hospital with COVID-19 in patient-facing, non–patient-facing, and unclassifiable healthcare workers was 0.20%, 0.07%, and 0.11%, respectively. Among those with COVID-19, the hospitalization risk was 11.5%, 7.3%, and 10.5%, respectively. …
