Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists and sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors have become favored add-on treatments for patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular (CV) disease because of their favorable CV effects. However, these drugs are also among the various options for improving glycemic control in metformin-treated patients without CV disease. To examine how these two drug classes compare in improving glycemia, researchers used individual participant data from several 1-year clinical trials that involved the GLP-1 agonist semaglutide (Ozempic; 1 mg subcutaneously, once weekly) or the SGLT-2 inhibitor empagliflozin (Jardiance; 25 mg orally, once daily). The manufacturer of semaglutide supported this analysis.
