Researchers recently published data on focused ultrasound as a treatment option for certain patients with localized prostate cancer (NEJM JW Gen Med Oct 15 2020 and J Urol 2020; 204:483). Now, California investigators report on a single-center experience with another method of partial-gland ablation: cryotherapy.
In this case series, 61 men (mean age, 69) with focal prostate cancer (intermediate risk or higher) were treated with hemigland cryoablation. Patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging–guided biopsies at baseline and 6 months after treatment; 27 underwent additional biopsies at 18 months.
