The randomized PLATO study demonstrated in 2009 that ticagrelor was superior to clopidogrel in reducing risk for myocardial infarction, stroke, or death in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS; NEJM JW Cardiol Nov 2009 and N Engl J Med 2009; 361:1045). However, more-recent observational studies have suggested less benefit and more bleeding with ticagrelor than with clopidogrel in this setting (e.g., NEJM JW Cardiol Dec 2020 and JAMA 2020; 324:1640).
