“Flipping the classroom” is a technique in which students watch content before class so that the teacher can use class time for discussions about the content rather than conveying the content. People have wondered whether a similar benefit might accrue from priming patients for their medical visit so that they can be more engaged and ready for a discussion with the clinician. Investigators tested such an approach in a randomized, controlled trial involving 290 people with heart failure and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (median, 32%; median age, 65; 29% women; 11% Black) who had a scheduled cardiology clinic visit (NCT03334188).
