Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are a common manifestation of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and have widely variable recurrence rates. To establish a baseline recurrence rate for SSTIs as an aid in assessing the efficacy of vaccines, investigators at academic centers in Chicago, New York City, and Nashville conducted an industry-funded retrospective cohort study between 2006 and 2016, using a standardized case definition and analyzing the data from their institutions in biennial cohorts.
Only 10% to 20% of SSTI cases also had the key comorbidities (diabetes, end-stage renal disease, HIV, cancer). Non–microbiologically tested SSTIs (NMT-SSTIs) were more common than SA-SSTIs. Among the tested SSTIs, 40% to 92% were SA-positive. The propor…
