In patients with mild COVID-19, the neutralizing monoclonal antibody bamlanivimab (LY-CoV555) may reduce viral load and decrease likelihood of emergency room visits and hospitalization. To test the efficacy of bamlanivimab in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, investigators randomized 314 such patients (median age, 61; 44% female) to receive one infusion of bamlanivimab or placebo given a mean of 7 days from symptom onset; 95% also received remdesivir, and 49% received steroids. Sustained recovery through 90 days and ordinal scale outcomes at day 5 (based on oxygen requirements and organ dysfunction) were evaluated. A prespecified futility assessment was performed after accrual of 300 patients.
