For certain clinical scenarios, enhancement with intravenous gadolinium-based contrast media (GBCM) improves diagnostic yield of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, in 2006, a syndrome called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) was associated with use of GBCM in patients with advanced kidney disease. The U.S. FDA recommends assessing renal function before patients receive GBCM. However, documented cases of NSF have become nearly nonexistent with use of newer gadolinium-based agents at recommended doses — including in patients with end-stage renal disease.
