The American Academy of Pediatrics makes the case for pediatric-specific antibiotic stewardship programs and recommends ways to implement and evaluate inpatient and outpatient programs.
Sponsoring Organization: American Academy of PediatricsBackground Information
Inappropriate antibiotic use early in life can increase resistance and might affect the intestinal microbiome, possibly leading to autoimmune conditions (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, diabetes). The Joint Commission has made antibiotic stewardship a standard of care for acute hospitals starting in 2017 and for outpatient settings in 2020. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has now released a policy statement on antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs) designed for inpatient and outpatient pediatric care.
