Excess Risk for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm with Fluoroquinolones

Ninety-day risk for AAA formation or repair was higher in fluoroquinolone patients than in those who took another antibiotic.

Some studies have suggested that fluoroquinolones are associated with excess risk for developing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) or dissection (NEJM JW Gen Med May 1 2018 and BMJ 2018; 360:678). In this latest analysis — a retrospective cohort study drawn from a U.S. health insurance claims database — researchers compared rates of diagnosed AAA or dissection in 9 million patients (age range, 18–64) who received fluoroquinolones and 35 million patients who received other antibiotics.
