Some studies have suggested that fluoroquinolones are associated with excess risk for developing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) or dissection (NEJM JW Gen Med May 1 2018 and BMJ 2018; 360:678). In this latest analysis — a retrospective cohort study drawn from a U.S. health insurance claims database — researchers compared rates of diagnosed AAA or dissection in 9 million patients (age range, 18–64) who received fluoroquinolones and 35 million patients who received other antibiotics.
