The major histologic subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) — clear cell, papillary, and chromophobe — have distinct genomes and heterogeneous natural history. To assess variability in sites of metastasis and overall survival for these subtypes, investigators retrospectively analyzed the International mRCC Database Consortium (IMDC) clinical database.
The analysis included 10,105 patients (median age, 60 years) who initiated systemic therapy from 2002 to 2019. Most patients (92%) had clear cell RCC; IMDC risk criteria were favorable in 19%, intermediate in 57%, and poor in 25%.
The median number of metastatic sites was two. There was only one metastatic site in 33% of patients with clear cell, 37% with papillary, and 43% with chromophobe RCC.…
