Among the few licensed COVID-19 vaccines worldwide, one was approved by the Russian government during the summer of 2020; however, no supporting efficacy data were presented at that time. Now, preliminary results of a large phase 3 clinical trial have been published in a peer-reviewed journal. The vaccine, called Gam-COVID-Vac (also known as Sputnik V), employs a combination of two adenovirus vectors, Ad5 and Ad26, into which the SARS-CoV-2 full-length glycoprotein S gene was inserted.
