Although voriconazole is recommended as a first-line treatment for patients with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, its adverse event profile has prompted a search for alternatives. Posaconazole has been approved for preventing invasive fungal infections in susceptible hosts, but its efficacy in the treatment of invasive aspergillosis remains unclear; thus, researchers conducted a manufacturer-funded double-blind trial involving patients with proven, possible, or probable invasive aspergillosis. Participants were randomized to receive posaconazole or voriconazole; the primary outcome was all-cause mortality within 42 days.
