Prognosis of Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Patients Who Use Antithrombotic Agents

In a national registry, patients who had an intracerebral hemorrhage while taking antithrombotic medication had a higher mortality rate than those with ICH not taking such medication.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with higher rates of mortality compared with ischemic stroke, and specific treatment options are limited. Many cases of ICH occur while patients are being treated with antithrombotic agents (either oral anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents). There are few large-scale studies on the prognosis of these patients. Now, researchers have analyzed a national stroke registry from Sweden. They divided ICH cases into those occurring while the patient was on either oral anticoagulant (OAC) medication, antiplatelet (AP) treatment, or no antithrombotic therapy. Outcomes included mortality at ≤24 hours and 90 days and 90-day functional status. Modified Rankin Scale score of 3 to 5 was considered dependent.
