Papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) is the most common histologic subtype of non–clear-cell renal cancer and accounts for about 15% of all kidney cancers. Patients with non–clear-cell histologies have frequently been excluded from large phase 3 trials, leaving clinicians to manage these patients with less prospective evidence and limited clinical experience. Based on evidence that molecular alterations in the MET oncogene are relevant in both type 1 and 2 PRCC, investigators conducted a randomized phase 2 trial evaluating agents with MET inhibitory properties.
