The manufacturer of semaglutide (Ozempic), which is currently FDA-approved only to treat diabetes, is conducting a series of five weight-loss trials. In the STEP 3 study, 611 overweight nondiabetic patients (most of whom had obesity-related comorbidities), were randomized to receive subcutaneously injected semaglutide or placebo once weekly for 68 weeks. Each participant received a low-calorie diet for the first 2 months (1000–1200 calories daily, with portion-controlled meals supplied by the sponsor) plus 30 intensive individual behavioral therapy sessions.
