The contribution of different antiretroviral agents to weight gain in persons with HIV (PWH) is currently debated. In this retrospective study using data from the Swiss National HIV Cohort, researchers evaluated the relative contributions of tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) versus tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) to changes in weight among 4375 participants on stable TDF-containing antiretroviral therapy for ≥6 months who then either switched from TDF to TAF without additional regimen changes (79.6%) or continued their TDF-containing regimen (20.4%).
At 18 months, weight gain was significantly greater (by 1.1 kg) in those who switched to TAF than who stayed on TDF, particularly in women of African (1.5 kg) and non-African (1.4 kg) origin. Havi…
