Because immunosuppressed individuals have been largely excluded from SARS-CoV-2 vaccine trials, little is known about vaccine safety and efficacy in this population. In two studies, investigators report serologic responses and safety in solid-organ transplant (SOT) recipients (median time from transplant, 6 years) after receiving one dose of either mRNA vaccine.
Blood samples from 436 SOT recipients were tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after receipt of the Pfizer-BioNTech (52%) or Moderna (48%) mRNA vaccine. Anti-spike antibody was detected in 17% of participants at a median 20 days postvaccination.
