To study the association between miscarriage and cardiovascular (CV) mortality, investigators with the Nurses' Health Study followed 101,681 women, including 26,102 women who reported at least one miscarriage from 1993 to 2017. During nearly 2.4 million person-years of follow-up, deaths from cancer and CV disease before age 70 occurred in 2936 and 269 women, respectively.
In analyses controlled for multiple clinical factors, miscarriage was significantly associated with CV mortality (hazard ratio, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.09–1.99). The risk was greater with increasing number of miscarriages (HRs: 1.40 with 1 miscarriage, 1.82 with 2, and 1.96 with ≥3; test for trend, P=0.006).
