Evidence suggests that hearing loss and vision loss are associated with cognitive decline. However, most of this evidence is from cross-sectional studies or longitudinal studies with methodological flaws. In this study, researchers evaluated associations between hearing and vision loss and cognitive decline in 295 older adults (age, ≥70; mean age, 82) who participated in a population-based, U.S. longitudinal study.
At baseline, participants underwent assessment for hearing loss (defined as better ear could not hear 25 dB at any frequency) and vision loss (defined as corrected binocular vision worse than 20/40).
