Intravenous metoclopramide plus diphenhydramine is effective in treating primary headaches. To test this treatment's efficacy for posttraumatic headaches, researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in two emergency departments in the Bronx, New York, from 2017 to 2020. They included 160 patients with acute posttraumatic headache according to the latest International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3). Onset of moderate-to-severe headaches occurred within 10 days before enrollment. Patients were given IV metoclopramide (20 mg) plus diphenhydramine (25 mg), or placebo.
