In 2010, the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was rolled out in Spain, initially in the private market then nationally. To evaluate the impact of PCV13 vaccination in children on the frequencies of vaccine serotypes (VT) in adults with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), investigators conducted a prospective observational study involving 3107 immunocompetent adults (mean age, 67) hospitalized for CAP. Serotype-specific pneumococcal urinary antigen assays as well as microbiologic testing of blood, sputum, and pleural fluid cultures were performed.
