Much attention has been given to the incidence and management of sport-related concussions (SRCs) in athletes, although many studies are in highly competitive or adult athletes. To examine risk for SRC and concussion management in high school soccer athletes, investigators reviewed 3 years of data from the Michigan High School Athletic Association registry, including 43,741 male and 39,637 female soccer participants.
The overall incidence of soccer-related SRC was 1.8 per 100 athletes per season. SRC occurred in 557 boys and 950 girls; the relative risk for SRC was 1.88 greater for girls than boys.
