In response to increasing patient volume, residency work-hour restrictions, and more recently, COVID-19–related staff shortages, practice models for inpatient medicine services have evolved. At some teaching hospitals, nonteaching hospitalist services have been created to supplement inpatient resident teams, and advanced practice clinicians (APCs) — a category that includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants — have been given increasing inpatient responsibilities. However, no study has compared all these staffing models directly.
