An internal carotid artery (ICA) web is a shelf-like protuberance in the posterior wall of the proximal ICA. Webs have been increasingly recognized with the widespread performance of computed tomographic angiography (CTA). Webs may be linked with ipsilateral ischemic stroke because turbulent flow and thrombus formation can occur near a web. To estimate the risk for recurrent stroke in patients with ICA webs, researchers reviewed CTA images from participants with large-vessel stroke in two large, national studies in the Netherlands, identifying those with an ICA web.
