Autoimmune encephalitis is an uncommon etiology for a first episode of psychosis without neurologic features.
A recently published international consensus (Lancet Psychiatry 2020; 7:93) raised the issue of an autoimmune psychosis (AP), based on overlapping features of psychiatric-based psychosis and autoimmune encephalitis. Additionally, N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis may begin with a purely psychotic clinical picture. For this study, patients were included with new-onset disorganized behavior, accompanied by delusions or hallucinations. A total of 105 patients with a first episode of psychosis underwent neurologic evaluation.
