Three highly effective COVID-19 vaccines are available in the U.S. currently. Their increasing use has made a dramatic difference in the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19. In this report, the U.S. CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Breakthrough Case Investigations Team describes the epidemiological findings of 10,262 SARS-CoV-2 infections that occurred before April 30, 2021, in people who were fully vaccinated.
The infected population consisted of 63% women (commensurate with the proportion of vaccinees); median age was 58. Infections were asymptomatic in 27% of the population; 995 patients required hospitalization, but 289 were hospitalized for indications other than COVID-19.
