Various methods are available for detecting occult atrial fibrillation (AF), ranging from watches to implanted devices. For patients with a recent, cryptogenic ischemic stroke, extended monitoring for AF is recommended. Two studies have now addressed whether other stroke patient subgroups could benefit from monitoring.
In STROKE-AF, funded by the study device manufacturer, investigators recruited patients with ischemic stroke in the previous 10 days. Participants were randomized to either an insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) or conventional clinical care and followed for 12 months.
