Myocarditis is a concern with SARS-CoV-2 infection, but the prevalence is unknown. To estimate it, a group of 13 large U.S. universities pooled data from screening of athletes, many of whom had undergone cardiac testing.
Data were available on 1597 athletes (60% men) who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection and had a complete cardiovascular evaluation that included cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. Thirty-seven athletes (2.3%; 27 men) were ultimately diagnosed with COVID-19 myocarditis based on CMR. They had the following clinical characteristics and findings:
