The five key symptoms of narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) are excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnopompic/hypnagogic hallucinations, and disrupted nighttime sleep (DNS). Adapted from the adult Narcolepsy Severity Scale, the 14-item pediatric Narcolepsy Severity Scale (NSS-P) quantifies the frequency, severity, and consequences of the five key NT1 symptoms based on a 4- or 6-point Likert scale, with higher scores indicating more-severe disease (mild: 0–14; moderate: 15–28; severe: 29–42; very severe: 43–54). These authors analyzed the psychometric properties, validity, reliability, and responsiveness to treatment of the NSS-P in children and adolescents aged 10 to 18 years with NT1 from two centers.
