New glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists keep coming, with particular focus on their cardiovascular (CV) and renal effects in patients with type 2 diabetes. In this industry-sponsored randomized trial, the GLP-1 agonist efpeglenatide, injected once weekly, was compared with placebo in 4000 patients with type 2 diabetes (mean age, 65; mean glycosylated hemoglobin [HbA1c], 8.9%). All participants had either prior CV disease or impaired renal function (glomerular filtration rate [GFR], 25–60 mL/minute/1.73 m2) plus a CV risk factor, and most were taking other drugs for diabetes and CV disease prevention.
