Previous research on teratogenicity of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) has been limited in the drugs and doses studied. For example, in the Neurodevelopmental Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs study, which examined carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, and valproate, exposure to valproate was associated clearly and dose-dependently with worse cognitive performance of children at age 6 years. The Maternal Outcomes and Neurodevelopmental Effects (MONEAD) study is a second prospective observational study to investigate exposure to AEDs and cognitive and behavioral risk in offspring of pregnant women with epilepsy (PWWE).
